Our risk of the month
This month we bound a particularly interesting Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL) policy – including contractors Pollution Liability and Site Pollution Liability. This new coverage line for APRIL Canada, was placed for a company in Southern Alberta that has a mobile system for applying different types of treatments and coatings to seeds to ensure they remain healthy and live longer. The company`s method of travelling to different farms throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan to treat the seeds right on the farmer`s property, is very interesting.
I was able to research this “Out of the Box” risk and understand its complexities to provide the broker with different quotes of limits and deductibles and make sure the coverage given was approved by the Agrichemical Warehousing Standards Association (AWSA). Because time was spent to understand the risk, the Broker and the Insured were both pleased with the coverage offered, including the wording and the premium. By working together with the broker, this one was a team effort from start to finish and has strengthened our broker relationship by assisting them in placing an “Out of the Box” risk.
Meet the Underwriter
I’m a small-town boy, born and raised in Southern Ontario and after college, I ventured out West to see what Calgary had in store for me. Like many people in the Insurance Industry out there I just fell into insurance; I found a job as a Marketing Rep for Canada Worldwide Underwriting Agencies in 2005 and then soon after, their sister company PAL Insurance needed help on the Underwriting side of things so I moved over there. The start of my Underwriting career began. I stayed with PAL as Office Manager/ Underwriter for 5 years then moved back to CWW (now APRIL Canada) to get back into Marketing and Sales. Again, with people retiring, I jumped back in to help on the Residential and now Commercial Underwriting side. I very much enjoy my day-to-day tasks and the people I work with are more like family than co-workers. I plan on being out on the road more in the future to do some broker visits with new and existing brokers that APRIL have worked with over the years. I really look forward to seeing many new faces and find out how APRIL can become your go- to MGA of choice.
